Birdathon Guidelines

  • ASNV members and non-members are eligible to compete. The only requirement for participation is that each participant must secure at least one pledge of a donation for ASNV. Participants should record all pledges on the their Team Page, which will be created for you when you register a team.

  • Participants can bird in teams of two to five.

  • The team’s Birdathon must be completed in a contiguous 24-hour period between April 20 and May 19, 2024.

  • At least two members of a team must identify the bird in order for it to be placed on the team's list.

  • All team members must bird together.

  • Teams must not use recordings to call birds or induce them to respond, such as by “pishing.” (Teams may, however, use a smart phone app or similar device, played at low volume, to help them identify a bird call that they heard.)

Report your Birdathon sightings on eBird.

  • Following the Birdathon outing, team members should contact their sponsors and advise them of how many species the team recorded and the amount of the sponsor’s contribution. The team member may collect checks made out to ASNV from the sponsor, or the sponsor may pay directly to ASNV by check, or donate online on the appropriate Team Page.

  • Within two weeks after completing its Birdathon outing, a team should submit its eBird list to ASNV info@audubonva.org Any checks collected should be sent to the ASNV office at 11100 Wildlife Drive, Suite 100, Reston, VA 20190.

  • In order for a team to be eligible for the “most species identified” prize, the Birdathon must be completed in Northern Virginia – defined as the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier and Rappahannock and the cities encompassed within, including Alexandria, Fairfax City, Manassas, and Manassas Park. Teams birding outside this area are eligible for other prizes that may be offered.

  • Prizes given for raising the most funds will be based on money received by the ASNV office as of May 31, 2024.
