Lights Out for Birds — Northern Virginia Bird Alliance

Lights Out for Birds Spring 2025

On March 4, Fairfax County Supervisor Walkinshaw, with the support of Chairman Jim McKay and Supervisors Jimenez, Stark, and Alcorn, introduced a joint matter to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recommending certain actions in support of Lights Out NOVA. The matter was seconded by Chairman McKay and was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors. You can read a transcript of the proceeding here. In adopting the matter, the Board of Supervisors pledged to

  • Direct the Office of Public Affairs to promote the spring Lights Out for Birds campaign during the migration season, which begins on March 15, and

  • Direct the Fairfax County Executive, in consultation with Fairfax County wildlife experts, to identify county facilities where nighttime lighting can be reduced or eliminated during spring migration

To support this effort, we encourage you to consider signing a “lights out” pledge. We will keep your pledge anonymous, unless you want your pledge to be made public. For those of you wanting your northern Virginia neighbors to know about your commitment, check the box allowing us to identify your pledge on our website.
