Herlitz Davis
I am an Associate Professor at Northern Virginia Community College, Manassas campus. I received my Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy from George Mason University where I investigated bird survivorship along a rainfall gradient in Jamaican Blue Mountain shade coffee agroecosystems. I also hold a masters in Zoology and a B.Sc. in Botany and Zoology from the University of the West Indies.
My previous professional experiences include work as a Field Biologist, Research Associate at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, Lecturer at Excelsior Community College, and Adjunct Professor at the University of the West Indies, Moorpark College, and Santa Monica College. I am an ornithologist by training and honed my skills as a naturalist while working as a field Technician on the Jamaica Parrot project in Cockpit Country. My experience in this rich and uniquely diverse habitat increased my knowledge of plants, snails, butterflies, bats, herps, and ecology, all of which has served me well during lectures, my own research, and when participating in environmental education and outreach with organizations such as BirdLife Jamaica, Birds Caribbean, and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center.
I am a birder at heart and while I have a working knowledge of birds, ecology, conservation biology, and natural history, I see every birding experience as an opportunity to learn something new.
